Armageddon Style Sheet A style sheet is a document that explains site specific guidelines for word use, spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. This sheet is intended to guide you while writing for Armageddon MUD, whether documentation, rooms, NPC's, PC's or objects.
Capitalization
- Capitalize the first word in a room title.
(Example: Inside a Big Courtyard) NOT (inside a big courtyard)- Capitalize all remaining words in a room title, unless they are articles (the , an, etc)
(Example: Under a Shady Grove) NOT (Under A Shady Grove)- Capitalize proper names, unless the proper name is used as a common name
(Example: The Main Bazaar lies to the west - this is actually giving the name of the bazaar. But, when you refer to the bazaar in general, just keep it lower ca se.)- Capitalize element names - Suk-Krath, Vivadu, etc.
Indentation: Room descriptions are indented three spaces, npc and object descriptions, which should be no more than one paragraph, are not indented.
Spelling:Unless otherwise instructed, use standard American spelling.
Some General Guidelines:
Frequent Mistakes:
- Do not use "you' in the descriptions.
- Do not assume what a character's reaction will be in the desc.
- Make sure that references to another room are indeed the actual name/item in the room. (Example: You mention Templar's Road to the south, but it is really called Templar's Way.)
How Some Common Words and Terms Should be Spelt
- That vs. Which: Let's say you have a car. It is red. The fact that the car is red is important to note. You want to emphasize the fact, that the car is red. It matters. In this case, use that - and remember, do not use a comma to separate that. (Ex: The car that I love is red.)
Now, let's say you have a car. It is in great shape. That is the important thing. It also happened to be used ten years ago - this is a fact, but not so important to emphasize. In this case, you would use which. Remember, it is separated by commas between the important facts of the sentence.
(Ex: The car, which was used ten years ago, is now in great shape.)
- Its vs. It's:
Use it's as a shorter form for it is.
Use its as a possessive form for it - "There was a turkey. Its feathers were cool."- Fragments in descriptions: Try to avoid fragments, or not using complete sentences with subject and verb agreement.
Ex: Let's say this is a PC's description:
Do Not: A tall, sturdy man. He has brown hair. Creases around his eyes.
Do: Here is a tall, sturdy man with brown hair and creases around his eyes.
- Hyphenationi: When you use a noun and an adjective only, you don't need a hyphen.
(Ex: His blue (adj) eyes (noun).)
When you use an adjective to describe another adjective that describes a noun, use hyphens.
(Ex: His eyes are blue-grey. He has a dark-red car. (Dark describes red, which describes car))
- Baobab, not baobob
- Cannot, rather than can not
- Grey, not Gray (as in the Forest)
- Labyrinth, not Labrinth
- Suk-Krath, not suk-krath
- Tan Muark, not Tan Maruk
- Tektolnes
- Zalanthan, not Zalanthian
