Most bards belong to a formal organization called a Bardic Circle.
These Circles are comparable to small merchant's houses.
While the majority of its human members are related by blood, a Circle may also
include a number of adopted members, including bards of dwarvish or elvish
descent. Circle Rusarla has traditionally been more welcoming to non-human
musicians, and holds the largest number of such musicians.
A Circle will provide its members with training, contacts for employment,
discounted prices on the instruments it provides, and shelter and food for
the indigent, although most bards prefer to provide their own. In return,
a Circle's member tithes 25-50% of their wages/commissions to the Circle,
depending on how much they rely on the Circle for daily sustenance.
While small splinter Circles appear and disappear on a regular basis, the
Circles which have survived since the Fall of Tuluk are:
- Irofel: Irofel Circle has traditionally focused on lore,
gathering knowledge and new songs wherever it can. Its emissaries have
traveled across the Known World, although the Circle shares the knowledge
gathered in this process only with its own members.
- Groot: Groot Circle, it is said, produces the best examples
of percussion instruments in the city. It also deals in raw materials,
frequently supplying the other Circles with wood, tortoiseshell, and
precious stones.
- Konviwedu: By tradition, this Circle oversees the Uaptal
Theater, and focuses on performances, particularly the combination of
story and music.
- Elkinhym: Bards who focus on humor and satire tend to gravitate
to Elkinhym Circle, which produces the majority of jesters as well as
bards specializing in political satire. Members delight in playing
practical jokes on each other, and a particularly successful and spectacular
prank often works to elevate a member's standing in the Circle significantly.
- Rusarla: Rusarla Circle holds most of the bards of non-human
descent, and accordingly also specializes in music and instruments not of
human origin.
- Driamusek: Many of the children of the nobility are tutored
by bards of Driamusek Circle, which specializes in diplomacy, ettiquette,
and other social matters.
Arcs of Learning
Bards achieve the status of Master Bard by mastering what are called the
Arcs of Learning. Each Arc represents a basic area of knowledge, and a Master
Bard will be skilled in each of the following:
- Arc of Music: To master the Arc of Music, a bard must be
able to play and create a musical instrument from each of the three
major types: percussion, wind, and stringed.
- Arc of Song: To master the Arc of Song, a bard must know
the standard repertoire of songs, as well as being able to compose an
impromptu song on any topic when challenged to do so.
- Arc of Words: To master the Arc of Words, a bard must know
the standard repertoire of stories, from the humorous to the historical,
as well as being able to compose such. They must also have mastered the
intricacies of Tuluki ettiquette, the gentle art of diplomacy, and
speak at least one language beyond sirihish fluently.
- Arc of Acting: To master the Arc of Acting, a bard must know
the basics of the theater: performing, costuming, mimicry, make-up, and
crowd-control. Traditionally, a bard must have performed a central role
in at least one major theatrical performance.
- Arc of Lore: To master the Arc of Lore, a bard must know both
the history and geography of Zalanthas thoroughly, as well as demonstrate
in-depth knowledge of at least one other area of specialized learning,
such as herb-lore, a crafting skill, animal-training, etc.
- Arc of Blades: To master the Arc of Blades, a bard must demonstrate
her or himself competent with at least one weapon.
Only Master Bards can take someone into their Circle, contingent upon
agreement by a majority of the rest of the Circle's Master Bards, and only
Master Bards can formally take on an apprentice.
