Skill Archery

The skill of using bows and crossbows is called archery. It is a vital skill to rangers, and many warriors eventually learn the skill as well. On Armageddon MUD, this skill incorporates the use of slings as well.

In order to use a bow, it is necessary to take hold of it in your secondary hand, and nock an arrow (by holding one in your primary hand).

Crossbows must be gripped with your primary hand, and your secondary hand left free to brace your aim and shoot. Note that these items (crossbow and bolt) need to be in your character's inventory for you to start the loading process.

To load a sling, the sling and the bullet must both be in your inventory. After loading with "load sling bullet" (using the appropriate keywords), you must hold the sling in your primary hand.

Use "shoot" to actually shoot the arrow, bolt, or bullet. You can shoot targets in the same location as your character if you wish, in which case you do not need to specify a direction. (Note that this will initiate hand- to-hand combat as soon as the shot is taken.)

You can shoot in a direction by providing a distance instead of a target. Valid distances are the same words seen when you look in a direction, "near" for one room, "far" for two rooms, "very far" for three rooms. You will have no chance of hitting a target if you use distance, but it is useful for sending a warning shot.

Syntax:

es bow

ep arrow

shoot <target> <direction>

shoot <target> out

shoot <target> <wagon item>

shoot <distance> <direction>

load crossbow bolt

ep crossbow

shoot <target> <direction>

shoot <target> out

shoot <target> <wagon item>

shoot <distance> <direction>

unload crossbow

(If you change your mind, and don't wish to have a loaded crossbow

lying around.)

load sling bullet

ep sling

shoot <target> <direction>

shoot <target> out

shoot <target> <wagon item>

shoot <distance> <direction>

pull quiver

(If your character is wearing a quiver, with at least one arrow in it,

this command will pull out the arrow and have your character brandish

it, all with the one command.)

Examples:

> es bow

> get arrow backpack

> ep arrow

> shoot gith north

> es bow

> get arrow backpack

> ep arrow

> shoot far north

> es bow

> pull quiver

> shoot gith north

> load crossbow bolt

> ep crossbow

> shoot halfling up

> ep crossbow

> load crossbow bolt

> unload crossbow

> get sling backpack

> get stone backpack

> load sling stone

> ep sling

> shoot tregil east

Notes:

Agility affects the actual chance to succeed.

The chance to hit drops as the distance to the target increases.

Crossbows and slings must be loaded before they can be used.

All bows, crossbows, and slings have a 'maximum range' and are designed for a particular strength (i.e., the strength required to pull the string back).

Those persons shot at will usually become very angry.
