It can be very difficult to make a beginning on Armageddon MUD, due to the harsh nature of the world and the fact that conventional goals are not present. The following suggestions may offer some help.

Getting some basic needs met:

Finding and obtaining food and water and some basic clothing can be difficult to newcomers. Visiting an inn or encountering a merchant can yield the most basic supplies, while a venture to a bazaar may be in order for more specialized needs. Finding a place to call home can be difficult, but inns usually have a space or two left in a common room for the desperate. Don't travel outside of your hometown until you are certain about where your next drink of water is coming from. Here are some possible methods of obtaining what you need:

  1. Join a clan. Clans (q.v.) usually have either storehouses of goods to support their members or else have sufficient funds with which to buy whatever is necessary for survival. In most clans, there are at least some who are able to protect the other members from such dangers as raiders.
  2. Scavenge. The wastes, and sometimes even the cities themselves, are littered with the castoffs of others. While not entirely profitable this strategy can usually provide for basic necessities.
  3. Steal. This ranges from picking up a sack which some careless person has dropped to picking the pockets of innocent bystanders. While often dangerous, thievery can also be the quickest path to financial stability. Be aware that unskilled thieves are easily caught, and that justice in the City States as well as smaller towns and villages may be swift and brutal.

What should I do?:

Armageddon is without conventional goals such as experience points and levels. For many this can be a source of frustration, because they don't know what to do with themselves. However, the sky is truly the limit, and virtually any pursuits you can invent are possible. These tips might assist you in developing your character's ambitions:

  1. Read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions), which can be found under the help topic of the same name. Many, many, MANY answers can be found in these. The helpfile top40 lists the 40 most useful helpfiles.
  2. Learn your surroundings. If you can, make maps.
  3. Read the racial information such as race_half_elf (or whatever your character happens to be).
  4. Read the guild information such as guild_warrior.
  5. If you are still wondering what to do next, find someone who seems to know what they are doing and try to make friends. You might discover or invent your goals based on what they do.
  6. If all else fails, use the wish command (q.v.) and get staff member assistance.
