Connecting to the Game

Connecting to the Game

There are many methods that can be used to connect to the game. The three main methods are to use telnet, to use the online client or to use a mud client.

Telnet

Telnet is a program that comes with most operating systems. The easiest method for using telnet is to click here: telnet://64.252.79.51:4050. This will open telnet and connect you to Armageddon.

If that doesn't work, you can search for telnet on your computer. In Windows, this is done by clicking the start button and selecting Run. Enter "telnet" in the search, and hit enter. If your computer is lacking telnet, try downloading a telnet client, like Putty, or try one of the other methods. If you are using a Macintosh, you may need to download a telnet program, such as BetterTelnet or NiftyTelnet. These are available in the Macintosh section of www.tucows.com

Which version of Telnet you have depends on how you connect. Here are instructions for connecting with two common versions.

Windows 98

:

If you have Windows 98 then chances are you have this version of telnet. Once you have opened it, you will most likely see a toolbar with Connect, Edit, Terminal, Help across it.

Click on Connect and then Remote System.

That will open up a window that has Hostname: and Port: in it somewhere. In the box next to Hostname: you type ginka.armageddon.org and in the box next to Port: you type 4050, that's it.

This should then connect you to Armageddon and you can go down to the following steps. If this didn't work, you should try one of the other methods.

You will probably notice that when you type, nothing appears on the screen. Don't worry: this is normal. To make the text appear on the screen, go to Terminal, then Preferences. Somewhere it should have Local Echo; tick the box next to it. This isn't necessary to make telnet work, however I find it preferable to be able to see what I am typing.

Windows XP

:

If the above steps didn't work for you and you have telnet, chances are you have a newer version of Telnet, which is found in Windows XP. Open it up, and you will be given a screen that doesn't have any menu bar, it just has a screen with some writing on it, possibly saying Microsoft Telnet.

To connect, type open ginka.armageddon.org 4050 and it will connect to Armageddon for you. You can then continue down to the steps on creating an account.

You will probably notice, that when you type you can't see your writing. This is normal and you can play the game properly with the settings like this. However, if you want to be able to see what you write, then open up telnet, don't connect to anything yet and type set localecho. It should then say something like Local echo on. You can then connect to Armageddon and see what you type.

Web Client

The Armageddon website has a client on their website that you can use if you have a Java enabled browser. It can be found on the homepage under Web-browser Client http://www.armageddon.org/client. When the page completely finishes loading, you should see a Button under Just click on the button to connect! saying "Enter Zalanthas". Click on this and you are ready to go onto the steps detailing how to create an account.

MUD Clients

A Mud Client is a program that allows you to connect to a MUD more easily than with Telnet. GMud is a easy and reliable client, which can be downloaded by going to http://members.tripod.com/~karn10/links.html and clicking on the Download GMud link.

Once you have downloaded and unzipped it, go to the folder where you saved it and click on the GMUD32 icon.

This opens up GMud. You will get a message saying .Could not find World List, Creating new world list. Click okay.

You will now see a screen with various icons. Click on File and then go down to Connect. This opens up a new window with a variety of buttons and textboxes.

Click on the Add button, which is the second box at the bottom from the left, and you will get a prompt saying "Enter a name for the new world."

Type whatever you want here, however it.d probably be easier to just type Armageddon.

Click okay. This will make the word Armageddon appear in the box on the left. Now in the Host Name textbox type ginka.armageddon.org and in the textbox below it for Port type 4050.

This connects you to Armageddon, and you can now create an account.

Creating an Account

Once you have connected to Armageddon you will see "Welcome to Armageddon" with a menu below it and a picture of a Mantis head next to it.

At the bottom of it all it will say "Choose Thy Fate". To create an account, type C and then enter. It will say "Enter your account name". This is the name for your account -- you don't have to type in your character's name or your real name. For example you could type "John" or "Xuioasdsa". Whatever you do type in, try to make it easy to remember.

If someone else has this name it will ask for your password At this point just close down telnet or whatever program you.re using to connect, and re-connect again, this time entering a different name. Keep on doing this with different names until it says "Account not found, is this a new account?" Type Y for yes.

When you are asked for your e-mail address, make sure you enter a valid one. You can use free emails, such as hotmail or yahoo.

A password is then sent to your e-mail account, which you can use to log in and create your character. If you don't receive an email within 24 hours, try creating an account again. If the problem persists, email mud@ginka.armageddon.org for assistance.

The prompt will say it's conducting a survey to find out how you found out about Armageddon. Provide a brief explanation, such as if a friend told you just write 'From a friend'. You don't have to say how you found out if you don't want to; press enter and it won't take an answer from you. It will ask you to press RETURN to disconnect. This will disconnect you from Armageddon.

Now you will need to wait until you receive the e-mail with your password. Once you have received the e-mail sign into Armageddon again.

Enter C for connect to account then type in the same account name as before and then the password when it says 'password:' that was provided in the e-mail.

It will then say "Enter a new password for your account:" Type in a password. It will then say "Please confirm the password:" Type in the exact same password again. The program is case-sensitive, meaning that the game does not regard "a" and "A" as being equivalent.

This password will be needed every time you connect to your account. You are now ready to create a character.
